What are the pros and cons of living on the north shore of oahu?
Q. I live in Alberta, Canada and think I want a change. I've got this idea in my head that the north shore of oahu would be a great place to live. Would like to hear from some people that live or have lived there.

A. Hey I was born in Alberta also, but then we moved to Oahu. I spent most of my life on Oahu. The north shore used to have the reputation of being a community for the "off the beaten track" crowd. People that did not want to live in a city type environment and deal with traffic and crowds. It is still a very beautiful town, although it continues to move forward with some of the chain companies setting up stores in town. All in all it continues to hold the charm of a semi suffer town. The only cons would be the town is very rich in soil. There used to be sugar cane and pineapple fields, however, those are long gone, but the soil is still very red. If you can get over tracking red dirt in your house then you will love the north shore. I… [cont.]

Is there an airport on the North Shore of Oahu?
Q. I am looking to vacation in Oahu this coming winter break. I know there is an airport in Honolulu but is there one closer to the North Shore?
Asked by Keren B - Sun Aug 2 19:52:28 2009 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Not for non-military (there is an airport on the military base) or if you don't have your own private small plane (there is a private plane airport on North Shore)... But you can take The Bus (the island bus system) to get there if cost is an issue. The Bus has routes that go around the island clockwise (westbound) and counter-clockwise (eastbound). There is one (easy) transfer involved. 1. Ask the airport personnel to point you to where The Bus stop is. 2. Take Bus #62 that will go towards North Shore, but ends at either Miilani or Wahiawa. Tell the driver you want to connect to Bus #52 that circles around the island. From this bus, just get off when you are at your North Shore destination. If you have a specific destination… [cont.]

What should I know before surfing on the north shore of Oahu?
Q. I started surfing last year at Hau bush, and white plains (south shore). I started out on a 9'6 board, then I moved to a 7'6 and could catch small waves on both. After that, I tried a 6 foot board but couldn't catch anything with it. I'm used to smaller surf, 5 ft and under. I haven't surfed in a while, but now I've got the itch to go agian. I'm 5'3 120lbs. What size of board should I buy, are there some tame areas that aren't in Waikiki? I'd like to get out of my normal two surfspots. What should I know about catching larger waves? I'm a chick and I live in Hawaii, hence i have three surfing choices, flat, tame, and crazybig

A. 1) Just go up there and check out the scenes and the different setups. Take a board you know well and are confident with (think about it: the northshore has seen everything from 12' redwood logs to 5' tow-in boards). It's your attitude, not the waves. 2) Pick a 2-4' day. That's easy info to get. And preferably go midweek when all of Town isn't headed to the North Shore. 3) Start out at Chun's reef. Rights and (shorter) lefts. Nothing scary there. 4) Work up to Lani's next - it's just next door to Chun's. Easy in/out, consequences are minimal until it's a solid 6'. 5) Head down and get used to some basic rip and current experience at Haleiwa. It's a great wave as well. 6) Wait for a 2-3' day midweek and head up to Pupukea. … [cont.]

Are there any new bars on the North shore of Oahu?
Q. Will be in town in a few weeks and have never found a dive to compare to the Sugar Bar.

A. As a huge fan of Oahu, I have to say this is a most interesting question. I can't recommend a bar on the North Shore, but I can recommend the Tree Top Lounge in Honolulu located above the shops in the International market place. It's the only place in Honolulu you can get 3 beers for $10.

A. that all depends on what you are planning to do... if you are planning on shopping, the nearest mall is about 30-45 min away (depending on traffic). if you are planning on checking out honolulu's night life, honolulu/waikiki, which is where all of the clubs, bars and touristy things are, is about 60-90 minutes away (again, depending on traffic). however, if you are planning on sitting back and relaxing, the north shore is definitely the place to be. it not only offers some of the most amazing beaches in the world, but it offers a chance for you to trully experience hawaiian culture in its entirety. the following is a list of things there is to do up at the north shore: 1) historical haleiwa town - a town that is modeled to look… [cont.]

A. Congrats on your trip to Oahu. You will love it. Hawaii is truly paradise on earth. (hope you are not going this week though). Most hotels on Oahu are in Waikiki. The north shore sparsely populated and is known for it's big wave surfing in the winter. Turtle bay resort is a nice play to stay for a honeymoon. Which is on the north shore. But it is expensive... So wouldn't recommend staying their unless you surf or have big bucks. Some must see places are: 1) Check out Banzai pipeline beach (on the north shore) It's where all the big wave surfers are. 15 foot+ waves in December. 2) Like to swim in a tropical fish tank... Then check out Hanauama bay (go early in the am since parking gets full quick). Bring a snorkel and mask. 3)… [cont.]

A. We just returned from Oahu, and while we did not try this activity, my cousin, who conducts marine life research there, works with one of the companies that offers "swimming with sharks." He highly recommended this activity and said that it's done very well under extremely controlled circumstances. You are lowered into the water inside a cage and the sharks swim around the cage. We didn't try it this time as we have younger kids, but like I said, my cousin couldn't say enough good things about the program and how it's done.

A. Hale'iwa town is archetypical beach village, lots of little shops & restaurants & a good beach. About 5-7 miles south of the famous Banzai Pipeline surfing spot. You'll find awesome beaches throughout that area, all quiet -- but be warned, parking at beach PARKS can be nonexistent. All beaches are public, parking on side of road OK unless otherwise posted. Check out roadside produce stands for super-fresh coconut & pineapple. If you love shrimp, try coconut shrimp out of the local shrimp trucks, esp. the one next to 7-11 -- totally worth it. oh, and if you go up H-2 to get there, stop at Dole Plantation for pineapple whip and awesome pineapple garden.

What's the best location for a beginner to surf in Oahu?
Q. I'm in the Army, and I'm currently deployed to Iraq. Soon I will redeploy to Hawaii and I wanted to see if anyone knows the best place in Oahu (Preferably North Shore since that's where I'm going to live) to learn how to surf. I'm not worried about actual instructions, I'm mainly worried about good sized waves for a beginner to work with. I've never surfed before. Thanks for any info.

A. The above link is very informative in general. Generally the North Shore (Sunset Beach, Bonzai Pipeline, and Haleiwa) are for advanced surfers but there are spots for beginners. The bases list Hale Koa, Pyramid Rock, Fort Hase, and North Beach as surf spots and Hans Hedemann as the preferred surf instructor.

Q. I'm not familiar with Oahu! Traveling to see the Pipe Masters contest this December and found a place to stay in Honolulu. Travel time is not an issue and I don't want to rent a car. What's the bus route like? Are there tours that stop and drop me off there? Any info appreciated.

A. Its a very long way to the Pipe. Remember just getting out of Honolulu some times takes over and hour. The bus to the north shore works fine but it takes forever. Many stops and it fights the same traffic. Check with your hotel. They have many tours going literally everywhere. You can probably get there quicker with this method but it will cost just a bit more. But... really, It really would be worth your while to rent a car. Remember that the Masters timing is not cut in stone. Weather and wave conditions lead to many postponements, so you might spend hours to get there only to find that the days events have been canceled. You can check on the radio every morning early and they will let you know the chances of the contest… [cont.]

Are there calories in the sugar free snow cone flavors at 'matsumoto shaved ice' in Hawaii?
Q. Specifically the vanilla and banana flavors. Matsumotos shaved ice is on the north shore on Oahu. I think it's in a town called haleiwa or something like that.. Any help on the snow cone calories?
