Haleiwa or Waialua bettter on North Shore of Honolulu?
Q. im am going on a vacation to Honolulu, we;re spending one day off to the north shore. the question is that which place are better off to visit, Haleiwa or Waialua?

A. Hale'iwa has Matsumoto's Shave Ice, voted best in the Islands by the travel channel. Some good places to eat are there as well (Kua Aina Burger, Rosie's Cantina) as well as a few shrimp shacks and other places. You'll see bbq trucks near the courthouse on weekends, and there are lots of little shops in the area. If you go down Kam Highway a little to the other end of town, you can get to the beach and the marina. There is Hale'Iwa Joe's there to eat great seafood as well. Like posted before, Waialua is just a sleepy town. not much to see or do unless you want to visit a candle factory.

Is Haleiwa on Oahu's North Shore worth visiting?
Q. I will be traveling to Oahu at the end of February and I was wondering if taking a bus to Haleiwa is worth it? Is there a lot of unique shopping or restaurants there?

A. I think that Haleiwa is definitely worth the bus trip up. It's my favorite place on Oahu. Shopping is mostly surf shops and a few tourist shops if you want something like that (Dive and Surf is the best surf shop there). As for restaurants, there are a couple really cute place. Ted's bakery is fabulous, they have typical Hawaiian plate lunches but their pies are the best. Also, if you go you have to get shave ice. Matsumoto's is the most famous but Aoki's is right next door and it's just as good and usually has a shorter line. There is also a great thai restaurant in the downtown area, but I don't remember the name- sorry! Aside from the shops and restaurants, you'll be going to one of the most famous surf places in the world. … [cont.]

For those familiar with Kua Aina burgers, which location is best (Haleiwa or Ward Center)?
Q. There is the one in Haleiwa and then I saw one at the Ward center. Is one better than the other? Or are they both equally the same? Sure, others have suggested Teddy's Big Burgers and Cheeseburger in Paradise... BUT I'm really interested in trying Kua Aina Burgers this time around and really need to know your which location is the better to go to. Perhaps you have tried both or know someone else who has. Thanks!

A. I have tried both locations and I must say that I liked it better at the Haleiwa Location. It's a must to try the original location first. It might be a little more crowded but well worth the wait and the crowd. 66-160 Kamehameha Hwy # C Haleiwa, HI 96712 (808) 637-6067 my choice all the way!

What is the best route to take from Kailua to the North Shore?
Q. I will be staying in Kailua and was wondering if it would be better to take 83 or to drive up the middle of the island to the North Shore. I really want to stop in Haleiwa and Waimea Bay Beach Park. Also, how long would the trip take and what day or time is better to avoid traffic? Thanks!
Asked by towen - Wed May 6 10:53:27 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Yes, you want to take route 83 (even though there are different routes for the same stretch of road, we just call it Kam Highway). Anyway, it's a two way street once you get into Kahaluu from Kailua, so you just follow the road and after about an hour or so you'll see that famous Haleiwa sign. You'll be going against traffic during the morning, so morning is best. But once you get into Haleiwa it may be a bit slow.

Can you tell me what Oahu is like in the middle of November?
Q. There are several places that we are going to visit. Waikiki, north shore, Waimanalo Beach, Hanauma Bay, Haleiwa. I want to know what kind if conditions can I expect in those areas. Is it safe to swim in those areas? Is the water warm? Does it get cold at night? Are there a lot of sharks or turtles?
Asked by Dark Knight - Wed Mar 18 14:17:37 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Waikiki is calm, while the North Shore (which houses Haleiwa) is hosting surfing competitions. I suggest you not go to Waimanalo. It's not a safe place. Hanauma Bay...I'm really not sure if there's high surf in November. But you can call and ask. Parking is tight in both Hanauma Bay and the North Shore, so get there early. It does get cold at night. If you're not a strong swimmer, stay away from the North Shore and (maybe) Hanauma Bay. Don't worry about sharks. Just don't swim at night. Turtles, not so much.

Which longboard is better for beginners?
Q. Which is better for beginners Loaded Dervish or Sector 9 Haleiwa or Loaded Vanguard? please help!
Asked by Liam F - Wed Mar 10 18:32:49 2010 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Do not get the sector 9! Sector 9's really suck, trust me. Loaded boards are great however, but are way too overpriced. Instead get a Kracked Skulls Scimitar. They are great customizable boards that are cheap to. Do a you tube search on them and you will be amazed. These drop-through boards are low to the ground which make them great for DH and sliding. The flex of the deck also makes them ideal cruising carving boards. Also save 5% off any purchase from www.krackedskulls.com by using the code DECA at checkout!

A. You were right when you said all of O'ahu is expensive. The prevailing logic in Hawai'i is that if things were cheap then lots of undesirables would flood the island and shove aside the locals. Actually Kaneohe on the WIndward Side has a few undiscovered 'gems' but for cheap living you should check out the Leeward Side and scope out Waipahu and Ewa Beach or go farther afield to Nanakuli and Wainae. Jobs are an odd concept if you do not mind a low wage then there are arguably a lot of jobs right about now (under ten an hour) but if you desire a livable wage well it an be interesting.. Longboard nut tightening?
Q. I have a sector 9 haleiwa longboard, and while i'm riding it the nut on one of the wheels is tightening, occasionally getting so tight that the wheel completely stops and i get thrown off. How do i correct this problem, and what is causing it?
Asked by John V - Mon Oct 12 14:54:13 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Three things. Bad axle nut. Replace it. Any skate shop should have them They are a standard size. Bearing is slipping out of the wheel. Visually inspect wheel. If it slips, remove it and wipe the oil from the outside of the bearing and the bearing seat. Axle slip. If one side gets tight and the other loose, the axle is slipping in the truck. Should be covered by the manufacturer's warranty.

North Shore of Oahu at night, is there something to do?
Q. I came here to surf with my bro, we got great waves and we re really happy to be in Hawaii, mostly or especially because of sunny part of the day... BUT! HEY, wait! There should be something to do at night, something! We go to Haleiwa Joes on Fridays, to Breakers on Mondays -cool but not that populated- but what with the rest of the week? By how crowded it gets, I know that there s people here, but, whats going on? They dont want to have fun at night? I dont think so! We re having this great BBQs, Uruguayan style, every night and Im tired of having my friend Daniel as the only face I look from every f--- night...
Are there still tons of tourist around this time?

We're talking about 25 ft for these competitions. It's fun to watch the surfers, and it gets crowded. So, you can cross out the North Shore for swimming (and Haleiwa, since Haleiwa is part of the North Shore). Hanauma Bay...I'm not positive whether this area gets high surf or not at this time, it probably doesn't since it's located in the East and if not, it is safe to swim. It's protected and I suggest you get there early as parking is limited. In all areas it does get cold. It… [cont.]
