The Hawaiian Islands are an archipelago of eight major islands, several atolls, numerous smaller islets, and undersea seamounts in the North Pacific Ocean, extending some 1,500 miles (2,400 km) from the island of Hawaiʻi in the south to northernmost Kure Atoll (the northwesternmost island in Hawaii is Green Island, which is joined to the Kure Atoll). Excluding Midway, which is an unincorporated territory of the United States, the Hawaiian Islands form the U.S. state of Hawaii. Once known as the "Sandwich Islands", the archipelago now takes its name from the largest island in the group. The islands are the exposed peaks of a great undersea mountain range known as the Hawaiian-Emperor seamount chain, formed by volcanic activity over a hotspot in the Earth's mantle. At about 1,860 miles (3,000 km) from the nearest continent, the Hawaiian Island archipelago is the most isolated grouping of islands on earth. From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License Why are the Hawaiian islands strung out roughly in a straight line? Q. -They formed along the magnetic field lines of the Earth. -Random chance. -The islands formed where the Pacific plate is hitting another crustal plate resulting in the uplifting of the islands. -The Pacific plate is moving over a stationary hot spot over which the Hawaiian volcanoes formed. -none of the above Asked by beebee - Fri Feb 29 17:08:01 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. The Pacific plate is moving over a stationary hot spot over which the Hawaiian volcanoes formed. and this is why... According to the new, generally accepted "plate-tectonics" theory, scientists believe that the Earth's surface is broken into a number of shifting slabs or plates, which average about 50 miles in thickness. These plates move relative to one another above a hotter, deeper, more mobile zone at average rates as great as a few inches per year. Most of the world's active volcanoes are located along or near the boundaries between shifting plates and are called "plate-boundary" volcanoes. However, some active volcanoes are not associated with plate boundaries, and many of these so-called "intra-plate" volcanoes form roughly… [cont.] Answered by angela - Fri Feb 29 17:38:25 2008 Do all the Hawaiian Islands have enough public golf for residents? Q. I'm thinking of moving there and haven't decided on which island. I'd like to be able to play on all the islands as a resident and not at those fancy, expensive tourist traps. Thanks for reading the question Rasta. I'm asking about all the Islands in general, not just the Honolulu area. Asked by ConnorWilhem3 - Tue Apr 17 11:29:13 2007 - - 9 Answers - 0 Comments A. didn't you ask this question before...about the 4-hour round? --- (edited) oops..sorry render, my bad...didn't read the question carefully. Outside of Oahu, I know only of Kauai with a municipal golf course: Wailua G.C. The thing about these munis is that you can't beat the price. I know you mentioned weekend golf, but if you can somehow squeeze in a 9-hole round on the weekday afternoons, you pay just $6!!! Cheaper than a movie! But Oahu, really is the place to move, if you want to golf. Again, the Honolulu/Waikiki area is tough, since there really is only Ala Wai G.C. and Pali, but on the Leeward side (west side of the island), there are 3 munis within 15 minutes of eachother. And the thing about not being able to play golf because of… [cont.] Answered by rastabudd - Tue Apr 17 14:36:58 2007 Which of the Hawaiian Islands is the Best to Visit?
Q. Want to go to Hawaii for vacation. Don't know which island to choose! Asked by theborg76 - Sun Nov 26 02:29:08 2006 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments A. It depends on what you want to do during your vacation. If you are into beaches, hikes and want to visit Hawaii for the natural beauty then Kauai is your best bet. Maui is too "touristy". Oahu (especially Honolulu and Waikiki) is very commercial but has good beaches up north. Lastly Big Island provides a good mix of everything but it takes you about 2-3 hrs to get from one side of the island(Hilo) to the other(Kona).
