What beach in Maui is good for beginner bodysurfing?
Q. My hubby and I will be going to Maui in the near future and we want to try bodysurfing (boogie boarding). We are not super strong swimmers and are worried a bit if we will be ok (we've only seen the ocean once when we were both kids). Is there a good beach for beginners?

A. Kamaole Beach 1 in Kehei is a good place. The beaches in southwest Maui tend to be flatter and wider than those in the Kaanapali area. That particular beach has a lifeguard, hence my suggestion.

What do you recommend for a honeymoon to Maui?
Q. My fiance and I are going to Oahu for two nights, and then on to Maui for a week to 12 days (we haven't decided yet). Neither of us have ever been there. Any recommendations you could give about travel books, places to see, stay, or things to do would be greatly appreciated. We were thinking about staying at either the Sheraton Maui Resort, or the Westin Maui Resort & Spa. Of course, we are open to suggestions. Thanks so much!

A. That can get pretty pricey if you're there for that long. If you book through a corporate travel broker you can save TONS & stay at high quality hotels like Outrigger & Diamond Hotels & many more. We just used an 8 day package from this broker & stayed at a 5 star beachfront condo resort in Maui which was gorgeous! We spoke to other couples who paid $350 per night at the same resort - we only paid $499 for all 8 days! i highly recommend this site for super deals, plus they also offer Fun Passes for Oahu AND Maui which will let you do every attraction & special tour on the island for FREE! I included the links for all of these below, good luck!

How far is it from Lahaina, Maui to Waianapanapa State Park, Maui?
Q. I am going to Maui for spring break and I've always wanted to see the black beaches in Wai'anapanapa but I think my family is planning on staying in Lahaina.
Asked by hannah violet - Sun Feb 7 19:13:21 2010 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. It would be 71.7 miles. First travel from Lahaina to Kahului, which is 23.1 miles. In this stretch you travel along State Highway 30 (Honoapiilani Highway) and then along State Highway 380 (Kuihelani Highway). Next section is to travel from 380 to State Highway 36 (Hana Highway) until it turns into State Highway 360 (which is also called Hana Highway), and travel to Honokalani Road, where you will take a left and travel to Keawaiki Bay, which is in the North (closest) section of Wai'anapanapa State Park. Where is the best and safest place to snorkel on Maui in May?
Q. We'd like to take our own equipment and go out on our own but have read that certain beaches can have rough water during certain seasons and sharks maybe? Has anybody snorkeled on Maui in May (and seen fish)? Thanks in advance for your insights!
Asked by victors - Sat Mar 28 13:18:02 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Here is something to remember. In the winter months, the north and northwest facing shores are rougher, and in the summer, the south shore is rougher. This is normally. In the summer months Maui has a little hidden bay on the west side that few tourist know about. It is called Napili Bay. North of there is Honolua Bay. It's a nature reserve. There's also one on the south shore past Wailea at La Perouse Bay. Napili Bay has best sunsets also. Also at Black Rock In Ka'anapali, they feed the fish sooften, that you can snorkel close in all along the shore line. Also in Wailea at a couple of the hotels. Ulua beach is one. For guaranteed fish photos, i'd stick to someplace like blacj rock or ulua beach in Wailea. Naplili is just for shear beauty… [cont.]

A. well it is always good to get roccomendations from people. if you "google" the shop name you will often times find reviews about the shop and artists from people who have gone there but the BEST way is to go to the shop yourself. look at portfolios, look at cleanliness and professionalism and just get a feel for the overall vibe of the shop to see if that is the place that you want to get your tattoo done.

A. minimum wage at least. but i heard the tips are really good though, because a lot of rich tourists like showing off to the poor locals who work two or three jobs just so they can have a roof over their heads and some food on the table. just work anywhere. jobs are scarce right now, so you'll be lucky if you can find a waiter job. good luck. see ya, wouldn't wanna be ya

What is the best place to buy groceries in Maui?
Q. My family and I are going to Maui soon and I don't want to eat out the whole time. We have a fridge and stove in the studio we are renting, so I was wondering where to find the best deal on groceries and fish.

A. Foodland has an excellent sushi counter, in addition to its regular fish counter. The Safeway in Kihei has the widest variety of Ben & Jerry's flavors on the island. I'm pretty sure it's the largest supermarket on the island. If you are headed Upcountry (towards Haleakala) you should stop by the Pukalani Superette on the corner of Old Haleakala Highway and Makawao Avenue (take a right on Makawao Avenue if you're headed uphill on the new highway) for some ready-to-eat local style food. The forks, napkins and chopsticks are on top of the bar where everybody is trying to decide among lasagne, roast pork and cabbage, chicken hekka, mahi mahi, or whatever they've got out that day. We love the Superette for its ready-to-eat dishes, its fresh… [cont.]

A. Most people in the service industry don't make alot of money there and room rents are very expensive. Most people end up rooming with several others who can share the rent. There's always a shortage of good servers in most of the hotels in Lahaina on the west side of the island as well as the hotels on the SE side of the island in Makena. You may also find some serving jobs in Kahului in the North central part of the island. Hana is a beautiful part of the island on the east side, but there's only the Hana Hotel and most tourists don't eat or stay there because it's VERY expensive. As for other expenses...gas is about $5(+) per gallon and food is about 20%-30% more expensive in the stores. As Jessica mentioned, speaking a second… [cont.]

What is the best fighting style to have with Maui Thai in UFC Undisputed?
Q. I really like Maui Thai, not because I automatically think its the best striking style but because im use to using 2 the Maui Thai and double under hook cliches a lot in a good fight. I know how to use grappling and submissions but i dont use them alot in a fight. And i like BJJ but only for the reversals. What is the best grappling style for some one who likes to stand up and use alot of cliches and combos.

A. I do like BJJ for the reversals too. When I have my back on the mat I feel much more comfortable with a BJJ fighter because they can sweep the opponent from any position on the ground. With other styles you need be in a particular position while BJJ doesn't matter. For me I say pick either wrestling or BJJ. Wrestling is good because of the slams which drain A LOT of energy. When I play I am a BJJ fighter the majority of the time because it makes you a threat standing or on the ground. As for strking, Muay-Thai is my favorite. I love using the muay-thai clinch. A. I have found the pricing to be best through Avis and Dollar. However, you should run a search on Orbitz.com to see which has the lowest pricing, then either book through Orbitz, or go directly to the cheapest agency's website, where you may save a few dollars. Good luck!

Q. I'm getting married in maui and need to deliver stuff needed for the wedding. I know when we send boxes home to the Philippines, there are straight shipping cost per box. Are there any such companies for delivery to Hawaii?

What city is the best to stay in on Maui Island, HI?
Q. I have decided to take a trip to Maui at the end of March and I was wondering which city on the island has the most to offer. I am not planning on renting a car due to budget so anything within walking distance is great. Also with access to all types of activities (biking, atv, snorkeling, jet skiing, luaus, food, cool towns, etc). Thanks! Your help is much appreciated.

A. Considering what you're looking for, I'd say either Kihei or Lahaina. They both offer alot of activities. Even though, Maui is not very big, and you will still have ample oppurtunity to explore the entire island. Good luck.

A. There are three main areas where the resorts are clustered, and one "adventure/isolated" destination area. The most popular and largest resort location is Kaanapali, the continuous line of resorts along the beach adjacent to the town of Lahaina. Kaanapali was one of the first outer island planned resort communities, with golfing and shopping centers. In this area, the Hyatt is the nicest. Farther up the road from Kaanapali is the Napili/Kapalua area. Napili is older, more casual and kick-back, while Kapalua is a very-upscale planned community overlooking the sea. There is only one resort of note here, the Ritz-Carlton which has a great rep. The negatives in this area is: far from any shopping and rather remote, not a whole lot to… [cont.]

What's the difference between Oahu & Maui? Everyone I know and read about goes to Maui, why?
Q. I really want to see the Arizona Memorial, go to the North Shore, see Waikiki, etc. on Oahu. But I don't have any friends/family who have been to Oahu, only Maui, and they rave about it. And in reading...it seems like there is much more to do on Oahu. This is my first trip and I can only stay about a week. Someone please help explain the difference so I will know where to stay. Are they the same or totally different?!?!?!?

A. Short answer: Oahu and Maui are both amazing. Your friends are raving because all the Hawaiian islands are incredible, and they only know about one. It sounds to me like you want to see a lot of things on Oahu, so go to Oahu. longer answer: A lot of people dislike Oahu because they only see the area around Waikiki. Waikiki is fascinating...lots of great people watching and interesting shopping, restaurants, night life, etc. However, there is much more to Oahu than Waikiki. You WON'T see everything in a week. However, you can see a lot if you choose what interests you. Here is one possible itinerary...modify to fit your interests. Day 1: Travel DAY 2: hanauma bay/WAIKIKI. Stay in Waikiki, get up early (jet lag will make you wake up at… [cont.]
