Does anyone know of a good non-denomination church on the North Shore area of Oahu Hawaii?
Q. Does anyone know of a good church close to the North Shore area of Oahu? I'm wanting to visit one, but don't really know where a good one is. And if you have their website, that would be amazing as well. Thanks!

What should I know before surfing on the north shore of Oahu?
Q. I started surfing last year at Hau bush, and white plains (south shore). I started out on a 9'6 board, then I moved to a 7'6 and could catch small waves on both. After that, I tried a 6 foot board but couldn't catch anything with it. I'm used to smaller surf, 5 ft and under. I haven't surfed in a while, but now I've got the itch to go agian. I'm 5'3 120lbs. What size of board should I buy, are there some tame areas that aren't in Waikiki? I'd like to get out of my normal two surfspots. What should I know about catching larger waves? I'm a chick and I live in Hawaii, hence i have three surfing choices, flat, tame, and crazybig

A. 1) Just go up there and check out the scenes and the different setups. Take a board you know well and are confident with (think about it: the northshore has seen everything from 12' redwood logs to 5' tow-in boards). It's your attitude, not the waves. 2) Pick a 2-4' day. That's easy info to get. And preferably go midweek when all of Town isn't headed to the North Shore. 3) Start out at Chun's reef. Rights and (shorter) lefts. Nothing scary there. 4) Work up to Lani's next - it's just next door to Chun's. Easy in/out, consequences are minimal until it's a solid 6'. 5) Head down and get used to some basic rip and current experience at Haleiwa. It's a great wave as well. 6) Wait for a 2-3' day midweek and head up to Pupukea. … [cont.]

When is the water calmest for snorkeling on the North shore of Oahu at Shark's Cove?
Q. I am planning a trip to Oahu next year. I would like to know what month the water is calmest at Shark's Cove for snorkeling. Thank you. I'm trying to decide between May, June, July, August, or Sept

A. Sorry! It's pretty rough out there in Shark's Cove! The best time to go anywhere in Hawaii is in the Winter months, because the weather is still nice, and the sets of the waves aren't as strong. So, as close as you can to the winter months is perfect. There's this other very nice snorkeling spot, called Hanauma Bay on the East shore, and it's a nature preserve, and there are nice creatures to see snorkeling! Hope this helped! Hope you are able to come and visit!

Any reviews or comments about Turtle Bay's Luau on the North Shore of Oahu?
Q. We are having our Maui-Oahu trip this September and would like to try other luaus on Oahu. Thanks. We have already been to a few other luaus on Maui and Oahu. I am particularly interested in Turtle Bay's Luau because we are going to be staying on the North Shore and I could not find a review online.

A. Fodor's doesn't mention anything about Turtle Bay's luau, but it does mention a few others. I'm not sure which you have been to before, but their choice for the best one on Oahu is The Polynesian Cultural Center's Ali'i Luau ($80-$195). It also mentions Germaine's ($65) which it describes as the most 'folksy and local', but suggests that it is best for first-timers. According to the book, Paradise Cove Luau has the best scenery, lots of pre-dinner activities and is kid friendly ($73-$118). On Maui, the Feast at Lele is more of a 'fine dining experience with an intimate beach setting' and is the most expensive luau on Maui, but is top-notch. ($105) Fodor's choice on Maui is the Old Lahaina Luau, which they say is the most traditional and… [cont.]

Turtle Bay Resort, North Shore Oahu, restaurant, grocery, liquer store?
Q. Leaving on Tuesday for Turtle Bay and will be getting there around dinner after a very long flight. We will have a car so don't mind driving. Could someone recommend one or two mid-priced, clean and nice restaurants nearby (I'm not seeing much I like at the hotel but if you think any of those are good for a casual dinner, please let me know). I would love specifics as to why you like the place...menu, cleanliness, service, price, etc. As well as approximate directions (town is a must). Also, is their a close convenience store/grocery store/Wal-Mart to the hotel so we can pick up drinks when we leave for the day? And we're not big drinkers but I will be turning 35 while we are in Hawaii :-) and might like a nice bottle of champagne.… [cont.]

Yes the hotel has a sundries store, the items are limited & the prices are high. I've worked in hotels for 20 yrs. so trust me, I'm trying to not only save you time but money. Don't go into that store unless you have to! Band Aids, Chips, maybe a soda , you know what I mean. 5 miles West there is a "Foodland" that's one of the cheapest & best supermarkets in the state, I live in Waikiki & I ride my bicycle 1 mile to shop there every week. There is only 1 main road on the North Shore where you are staying so don't worry. Whatdo you want to know about the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii?
Q. I need to put together an information package for visitors and new residents of Haleiwa Town, on the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii; what kind of information would you want to see on a visitor's guide? What are you curious about in Hawaii? Whatever you can think of will be of great help to me! Thank you very much It still is nice and country but for what I hear it will never be like the 80's. There are plenty houses and new developments but the country feeling is still here. The residents as well as the Governor want to keep the country country! Thanks

A. We used to have luaus on the North Shore with roasted pig and turkey cooked in pits dug in the sand. We used to watch the surfers. That was years ago when I was a teenager. I would like to know if anyone can still cook on the beach like we did. Is there anywhere to stay on the North Shore? It used to be free of big buildings and towns and wonderfully unspoiled by civilization.

A. Congrats on your trip to Oahu. You will love it. Hawaii is truly paradise on earth. (hope you are not going this week though). Most hotels on Oahu are in Waikiki. The north shore sparsely populated and is known for it's big wave surfing in the winter. Turtle bay resort is a nice play to stay for a honeymoon. Which is on the north shore. But it is expensive... So wouldn't recommend staying their unless you surf or have big bucks. Some must see places are: 1) Check out Banzai pipeline beach (on the north shore) It's where all the big wave surfers are. 15 foot+ waves in December. 2) Like to swim in a tropical fish tank... Then check out Hanauama bay (go early in the am since parking gets full quick). Bring a snorkel and mask. 3)… [cont.]

Restaurants in Oahu, Hawaii? (North Shore)?
Q. Hello! We are going on a family vacation in April to Oahu, Hawaii. It will be my husband and I, my parents and my three brothers. It was our christmas gift. My husband and I would like to take my family out to dinner one night and are wondering if anyone knows a really great family friendly(Fun) Restaurant? Not to outrageously priced but were okay to spend $150-$250 on the whole group. Then one night while we are there me and my husband want to go on a nice romantic evening out, so we would like a good suggestion for a Nice romantic Restaurant, we will probably spend around $100. Any ideas or links to websites would be greatly appreciated!! Thank you so so much!!

A. For the whole family, I would suggest the Oceanarium (808)922-1233. The restaurant is built around a huge fish tank. My kids were fascinated with it when we went there for a Mother's Day meal one time. For a romantic dinner, try Hy's Steakhouse (808) 922-555. But for seven people, you are only budgeting $35/head. I am not sure if it will be in that price range or not. And I think Hy's will run a bit over $100 as well. It's been some time since I ate there, but it is not an inexpensive place to dine. But worth the money in my opinion. Re-reading this, I am not sure if your brothers are adults or not. I initially was assuming there were kids in your group. If everyone is an adult, maybe you could try the Yardhouse. I haven't… [cont.]

Oahu Lunch and Dinner - North Shore as well as Honolulu?
Q. Going in 2 weeks, staying on the North Shore - Turtle Bay - and need decent lunch/dinner ideas. One or two higher end places and the rest mid-priced or lower, but not real fast food. North Shore suggestions are welcome, but obviously we will be driving around the island so any locations would be helpful. Anyone heard of Rainbow Drive-In in Honolulu. Saw it on a recent FoodNetwork special and it looked great! Also saw Rachael Ray eat at a Bento place in Waialua (North Shore Country Okazo & Bento) that looked good. Both are in the cheap eats category so I'd love to get opinions and not a bellyache from bad food :-). While I'm at it, where can the hubby get the best (or some really good) Poke? A. Here are some varied suggestions: For shrimp trucks - go to Giovanni's. It's literally a converted truck/van on the side of the road. If I remember correctly, it's about 10 minutes southeast of Turtle Bay. If you're going to order it spicy, get the sauce on the side!! Shave ice - Matsumoto's in Haleiwa. Haleiwa town - might be closer to you than Waikiki; there is Jameson's by the Sea, Cholo's (mexican), Kua Aina (good burgers), and Breakers (bar). Local foods - Rainbow Drive-in is good (if the mixed plate is too much for you, get the teri-beef burger). Up the street from Rainbow Drive on Kapahulu Ave (as you head away from Waikiki), on the left side, there is a Hawaiian restaurant called Ono Kine Grinds. Decent servings, decent… [cont.]

Up the street from Rainbow Drive on Kapahulu Ave (as you head away from Waikiki), on the left side, there is a Hawaiian restaurant called Ono Kine Grinds. Decent servings, decent… [cont.]

A. I am not familiar at all with Oahu and its waters, but I can tell you what to look for: 1. Shallow water (2-6 feet) 2. Minimum wake 3. Grassy or plant filled bottom 4. Scattered rocks or little holes where crabs can hide Now for your bait I like to put a piece of mullet, lady fish, or good old chicken neck in panty hose for there reasons: 1. Gives you an excuse to go in your wife's underwear drawer 2. The crabs claws get stuck in it 3. your bait will last longer Save me some crab Good luck! ;)

What's the best location for a beginner to surf in Oahu?
Q. I'm in the Army, and I'm currently deployed to Iraq. Soon I will redeploy to Hawaii and I wanted to see if anyone knows the best place in Oahu (Preferably North Shore since that's where I'm going to live) to learn how to surf. I'm not worried about actual instructions, I'm mainly worried about good sized waves for a beginner to work with. I've never surfed before. Thanks for any info.

A. The above link is very informative in general. Generally the North Shore (Sunset Beach, Bonzai Pipeline, and Haleiwa) are for advanced surfers but there are spots for beginners. The bases list Hale Koa, Pyramid Rock, Fort Hase, and North Beach as surf spots and Hans Hedemann as the preferred surf instructor.

What's the difference between Oahu & Maui? Everyone I know and read about goes to Maui, why?
Q. I really want to see the Arizona Memorial, go to the North Shore, see Waikiki, etc. on Oahu. But I don't have any friends/family who have been to Oahu, only Maui, and they rave about it. And in reading...it seems like there is much more to do on Oahu. This is my first trip and I can only stay about a week. Someone please help explain the difference so I will know where to stay. Are they the same or totally different?!?!?!?

A. Short answer: Oahu and Maui are both amazing. Your friends are raving because all the Hawaiian islands are incredible, and they only know about one. It sounds to me like you want to see a lot of things on Oahu, so go to Oahu. longer answer: A lot of people dislike Oahu because they only see the area around Waikiki. Waikiki is fascinating...lots of great people watching and interesting shopping, restaurants, night life, etc. However, there is much more to Oahu than Waikiki. You WON'T see everything in a week. However, you can see a lot if you choose what interests you. Here is one possible itinerary...modify to fit your interests. Day 1: Travel DAY 2: hanauma bay/WAIKIKI. Stay in Waikiki, get up early (jet lag will make you wake up at… [cont.]

A. north shore ? Oahu?, i loved a little Mexican place called Rosie's cantina, really good food, pizza bobs is really good to, the dole pineapple farm is just up the road and they have a giant walk-through maze, it was the biggest in the world till about a year or two ago., there's not like "TONS" of things to do in Hawaii, it's really best if you're going to relax, Oahu does have a pretty fun water park though. and there's a bowling alley on the nearby army Base where i was stationed, and a few other things to do on that post. also on the north shore, wiamaia bay(not sure if it's spelled right), is great beach, also there's a huge rock that you can jump off in to ocean from, definatly one of the better beaches in my opinion. oh yeah, alo… [cont.]
